Tiger Fuel’s solar acquisition makes immediate impact; EV chargers installed at local Market

Sep 8, 2021 | Blog

Charlottesville, VA – September 8, 2021

Tiger Fuel Company’s acquisition of Altenergy Solar has proven to make an immediate impact on clean energy. The two companies became one in May 2021 and recently collaborated on the installation of two EV chargers at The Market at Mill Creek, owned and operated by Tiger.

Altenergy’s Chief Development Officer, Matthew Dunay, identified an opportunity for the newly joined forces to reduce their carbon footprint. Dunay applied to Dominion Energy’s Smart Charging Infrastructure Pilot Program, aimed to help businesses install electric vehicle charging stations to support EV adoption across the state of Virginia. The SCIP program provided a rebate to cover the cost of EV charging infrastructure, equipment, and installation.

As a licensed electrical contractor, Altenergy’s installation team was able to spearhead the permitting and installation of the two EV chargers. Installer Daniel Limbacher completed a ChargePoint certification course and spent several weeks running underground pipes, pulling wiring and pouring concrete. Tiger Fuel driver, Barry Coleman, transported the two charging stations in a crane truck and supported Limbacher throughout the project installation.

“It was truly a team effort with both Tiger and Altenergy folks out there. All hands were on deck,” said Limbacher. The ChargePoint Paired Express 250 went live two weeks ago at Mill Creek and can charge two vehicles at the same time and share power.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this service to our loyal customers at Mill Creek. We are looking forward to learning about this new business segment, and how it will influence our industry. We try hard to provide an inviting atmosphere and a lot of delicious options for EV drivers to enjoy when they come and charge up at The Market,” said Gordon Sutton, President of Tiger Fuel.

While Tiger and Altenergy may appear to be an unlikely pairing, they have an ambitious goal of reducing their carbon footprint by 45% by 2025. In the last 2.5 years, Altenergy worked with Tiger to solar-power its gourmet-to-go convenience stores, The Market at Preston and The Market at Ruckersville, supplying more than half of each facility’s electrical needs. Future plans include installing solar panels on Tiger’s gourmet-to-go Markets, four bulk heating plants and all future real estate projects.

An EV Supercharge Ceremony will take place on Friday, Oct. 1 at The Market at Mill Creek during National Drive Electric Week, Sep. 25 – Oct. 3. President Gordon Sutton of Tiger Fuel, President Russ Edwards of Altenergy and Executive Director Susan Kruse of The Community Climate Collaborative  are set to speak.
